Touchscreen is a wonderful technology that has been part of almost every phone now a days . Its wonderful how touching a glass coating on the display of our phone can actually give commands to phone to do a specific task . You touch Bluetooth icon to turn it on or off call icon to call and so on . so lets get to know how this genius technology works.
Well touchscreen has two works to do, one is to detect that someone has touched screen and other is to detect where in screen has the person touched . Many techniques are available to do these tasks but most widely used two types of touchscreens are..
- Resistive Touchscreens
- Capacitive Touchscreens
Resistive Touchscreens
Resistive touchscreens are the touchscreen technology that were used in old touchscreen phones like old NOKIA Symbian OS phones , Samsung old Java phones etc. This type of touchscreen have two layers one is Conducting layer lying below and a Resistive layer lying on top . Conductive layer is supplied with the voltage and then a current is flowing through the layer . Resistive and Conductive layers are separated by saparators and thus a small gap is present between the two layers .
When we Touch the upper layer , we apply pressure on it . This pressure moves the upper layer towards downward layer . And when it touches the lower layer the current flowing in the lower layer changes and this change in current is sensed by the processor and tells which point on the screen is touched .
Well this was an old technology . Used by majority of phones till 2005-06 . But this type of touchscreens offer low display quality and also implementing Multitouch technology is quite difficult .
Capacitive Touchscreen
This was first introduced in I-Phones and soon all phones started adopting to this technology . Now all the phones available in market is using capacitive touchscreen technology . This
technology provides better multitouch capability and also provides better and more accurate touch capability .
In Capacitive Touchscreen technology , the whole screen is divided into several layers, lower layer will be display and upper layer will be protective glass (gorilla glass or whatever) . The middle layer is the combination of grid lines containing horizontal and vertical lines . Horizontal lines constitute of charges and Vertical lines are sensing lines .
Whenever we Touch the screen , our skin being electrically conductive takes out some charge , this is sensed by the sensing element lines to figure out where on screen the person touched .
This can better perform in terms of display resolution and thickness of display . Because we need good conductivity the Touchscreen doesn't work well when operated with other objects than finger or stylus.
There have been many improvements in this technology . The protective glass is integrated with the grids ,this reduces the thickness of display and thus showing better display quality as number of layers between eyes and display is less . We have this type of technology in AMOLED display and latest I-phones
