Every thing around us has display be it smartphones , car , bikes , TV etc. But have you noticed ? that the thickness of the display is getting decreased day by day . that is due to the revolutionary technology called LCD displays . Want to know? what a display is? click it to have a basic idea
LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display . why it is called so? well keep reading , you will come to know . An LCD display consist of mainly pixels and each pixel is divided into many layers
1. Backlight (light source)
2. Horizontal polarizer
3. Liquid Crystals
4. Vertical polarizer
5. Light Filter (Red,Green,Blue).
BACKLIGHT
This is basically a light source that provides basic illumination required for the pixel .
HORIZONTAL POLARIZER
This only allows horizontally polarized light , in simple words , light components oriented in horizontal direction
LIQUID CRYSTALS
This is the part which rotates horizontally polarized light into vertically polarized light by rotating . Angle of rotation is depended on the value supplied to that crystal .
VERTICAL POLARIZER
This filter only allows vertically polarized light to pass through it and blocks rest all components .
LIGHT FILTER
Light filter allows particular light to pass through . like Red filter allows only red light to pass through , similarly green and blue allows respective lights to pass through
Initially when backlight radiates only horizontal component is allowed and light coming out is horizontally polarized when it passes from horizontal polarizer , then light has to pass through liquid crystal and this crystal has property to rotate the polarized light . the amount of rotation of the light depends on the voltage supplied and then light passes through vertical polarizer .
Vertical polarizer only passes vertical components of the light. Say liquid crystal does not rotate the light . Then no light comes out of the vertical polarizer because light has no vertical component . But when light is rotated by say 90degrees then we have all components in vertical direction and the light coming out is maximum . If light is rotated to 45degrees then amount of light coming out is half the incident light . Thus by controlling the amount of rotation, amount of light coming out is controlled .
The variation in the intensity of different lights is done and different amount of RED ,GREEN BLUE lights are allowed to pass through to produce different colors . Say if we want to produce yellow colour then blue colour is not allowed to pass and red and green are allowed in equal amounts so Yellow is produced. Each pixel gives out a color and all the pixels work together to produce wonderful images on the screen . To know more about the Displays click .
